North Sea Open Regatta – July 12th 2017

This weeks North Sea Open Regatta saw some great sim weather with a tremendous turn out of racers. The sims behaved well as there were only 3 DNFs on the day for both races combined. We had a great turnout as 16 racers were in the small boat fleet. Spectator turnout was good as both Lighthouse Isle, in the Ziziphus region, and the shore in the Eden Alabatros region saw a huge crowd along with the spectators on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Puffin region, and the committee boat dock, in the Breadnut Region.

Also a small apology as I was not able to attend today’s races so this results post write-up section will be slightly abridged from my usual results posts.

The small boat fleet, racing a 3 lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop course, was made up of a majority of six Bandit IFs. The remainder of the small boat fleet was made up of four Flying Shadows (two crewed), two Quest Melges-24s, two Shields Class, a Bandit 25, and a Breezy 9er (which we do not have a handicap for and is notated as Not Available (N/A) in the results table).

The big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Outer Inner Loop (NS-OIL Rev1) course, was made up of a split majority of three Quest IACCs and three Wildwind Open 60s. A Wildwind RC-44, a Wildwind AC-45, a TMS One Design 65, and a TMS Ushuaia made up the remainder of the big boat fleet.

Today’s winner was Beane (beane Bade), with Neil (eager2discover Resident) second, and Lampoon (Lampoon Destiny) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Notes:
Penny (Penelope Debruyere), Lampoon (Lampoon Destiny), Rugger (ruggeromare Resident), and Palani (Palani Allen) were all unfortunately disqualified (DSQ) due to sailing the incorrect course in the Big Boats race.

Neil (eager2discover Resident) and Lampoon (Lampoon Destiny) both finished tied with 8 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
eager2discover Resident 1 7
Lampoon Destiny 2 6

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Neil’s favor with having a first place finish over Lampoon’s second place finish as his best.

Alexandre (ramuf Resident) and Red (RedHeadJO Resident) both finished tied with 12 points.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
ramuf Resident 1 11
RedHeadJO Resident 6 6

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Alexandre’s favor with having a first place finish over Red’s sixth place finish as her best.

Gryfin (Gryfin Goldshark), Ellion (Ellion Melodie) and Palani (Palani Allen) both finished tied with 16 points.

Gryfin Goldshark 3 13
Ellion Melodie 5 11
Palani Allen 6 10

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Gryfin’s favor with having a third place finish over Ellion’s fifth place finish and Palani’s sixth place finish as their best. Subsequently, Ellion’s fifth place best finish also breaks her tie with Palani and his sixth place best finish.
