This weeks North Sea RC-44 Regatta was a fast affair with smooth sims to support it. We had a nice turnout of spectators on the committee boat dock in Breadnut, the Eden Puffin spectator pier, and on the shore of Eden Albatros.
The first race, on the North Sea Butterfly course, saw Beane get off to a nearly perfect start, crossing at 00:00:01. Gabi followed at 00:00:03 while I was right in tow at 00:00:07. Burton was next across at 00:00:19 with Gail following at 00:00:30. The front of the pack saw some tight racing among Beane, Gabi, and I with Beane and I exchanging positions several times over most of the course. Gabi stayed tight in tow though and passed both Beane and I on the final leg from Eden Puffin to Breanut to take line honors and first place. I was across the finish next with Beane right on my stern, crossing third. Gail was next, crossing fourth. Burton unfortunately crashed and recorded a DNF.
The second race, on the North Sea Copacabana course, saw an outstanding start as 4/5’s of the fleet crossed the start in 4 seconds. Gail got off to a perfect start at 00:00:00. Beane and I both were next to cross at 00:00:03, with Gabi right on our sterns crossing at 00:00:04. Burton was last to cross at 00:00:58. Practicing pre-starts really does pay off, especially in a boat that is so quick to accelerate as the RC-44. Once again, the front of the pack was lively as Beane, Gabi, and I stayed within overtaking distance of each other for the duration of the course. Beane and I both changed positions several times. Beane held out though and took line honors as she crossed the finish first with me right on her stern, crossing second. Gabi was right behind us, crossing third. Gail was next to cross, with Burton coming in behind her.

Today’s winner was Beane (beane Bade), with Gabi (Gabriella Glenfadden) second, and Cryptic (Cryptic Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.
Beane (beane Bade), Gabi (Gabriella Glenfadden) and Cryptic (Cryptic Resident) all finished tied with 4 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
|Skipper||Best Finish||Next Best Finish|
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Beane’s and Gabi’s favor with having a first place finish over Cryptic’s second place finish as her best. Since Beane and Gabi have duplicate finishes and are still tied, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
|Skipper||Race 1||Race 2|
In the last race, Beane breaks the tie with Gabi with her first place finish over Gabi’s third place finish.
