This weeks North Sea Open Regatta had a great turnout with 15 sailors showing up to compete in two races. 14 were on hand for the small boat race while 9 raced in the big boat race. The sims were in great shape as we had no crashes and only one DNF due to a boat script issue.

The small boat fleet was nicely mixed with three each of Nacra 17’s, Bandit IF’s and Melges-24’s. Two Shields Class, a Dolphin Moth, a Flying Shadow, and a Teleri 20 made up the remainder of the fleet. Racing was pretty competitive on North Sea Olympic Long, with Arya and Cole out front, in their Nacra’s, followed by Viv and Beane, in their Melges-24’s. The Shields Class followed not far behind with the Bandit IF’s taking up the rear of the fleet.

The big boat fleet was comprised of a majority of Trudeau 12 Metre’s, with three. Two One Design 65’s, an AC45, an Open 60, a Trudeau New York 30, and a Bandit 60 made up the remainder. Cole took line honors in her Ac45, on North Sea Butterfly, with Makhno, in his Open 60, and Arya and Beane, in their One Design 65’s, not far behind.

Race Director: Petra
Wind: SW (225°) 18kts

Note:
Did Not Finish (DNF) = number of finish +1
Did Not Start (DNS) = number of start +1

Today’s winner was Cryptic, with Arya second, and Makhno in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Prize plaques will be awarded for the first, second, and third place finishers based on the final points tally.

Race Note:
Makhno, Cole, Jamie, and Beane all finished tied with 11 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Worst
Makhno13 Resident 3 8
Colette Verino 4 7
JamieGawith Resident 5 6
beane Bade 5 6

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Mahkno’s favor with having a third place finish over Cole’s fourth place finish and Jamie and Beane’s fifth place finish as their best. Furthurmore, the tie then between Cole, Jamie and Beane then breaks in Cole’s favor leaving Jamie and Beane still tied with duplicate finishes.
Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Skipper Race 1 Race 2
JamieGawith Resident 6 5
beane Bade 5 6

In the last race, Jamie breaks the tie with Beane with his fifth place finish over Beane’s sixth place finish.

Kyreena and BurrWolf both finished tied with 18 points.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Kyreena Resident 8 10
BurrWolf Qin 9 9

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Kyreena’s favor with having an eighth place finish over BurrWolf’s ninth place finish as his best.

  1. Well done to everyone who sailed. Congratulations to the winners. Thanks so much to cryptic for compiling and posting the results. What a great turnout, and so nice to see new faces and new sailors. I hope everyone had fun racing this format. It certainly looked amazing from where I was standing.
